| ANTI-GM MOTION ANGERS WA GRAINGROWERS |
WA politicians could force graingrowers in the State to defy their decision if they support a motion to disallow the release of GM technology in WA.
PGA Western Graingrowers Chairman Rick Wilson said a disallowance motion on GM moved by Opposition Agriculture spokesman Mick Murray was designed to keep WA’s grains industry in the ‘dark ages.’
“The 2009 GM canola trials have enabled WA growers to ‘see the light’. Mick Murray and his team of Greenpeace supporters are now mounting a last ditch effort to snuff out that light.
“The cost to growers if he succeeds will be in higher diesel, chemical and fertiliser use – the very uses Greenpeace wants us to reduce.
“The cost to WA will be massive losses in sales of canola and other grains to our major export markets such as Japan, Canada, the US and most other grain producing countries now rapidly increasing their use of GM technology.”
Mr Wilson said it was disappointing that a number of coalition members were even contemplating offering their support for the ALP motion.
“Voting for this disallowance motion means that they are prepared to deny graingrowers the choice to remain viable. GM canola is the one bright light on the horizon in very difficult economic circumstances and if this disallowance motion is passed the PGA will be recommending it’s members ignore the GM Free Areas Act and adopt this vital technology.”
